As American botanists raced to take credit of discovering a new species in the late 1940s, the original Chinese discoverer of the tree often went unmentioned in published literature.

Once reintroduced in America, Portland Oregon became the first home of a seed-producing Dawn Redwood tree after five million years of its absence from North America due to extinction.
